The different types of gypsum board and their uses

There are many types of gypsum board and they each come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This makes them suitable for most construction jobs. Knowing what type of gypsum board to use is important for contractors as it can reduce the cost of a building but also improve its quality. Gypsum board can also be called drywall, plasterboard or wallboard.

One of the main advantages of gypsum board is that it is simple to install due to the metal framework that holds it in place on walls and ceilings. When many gypsum board panels are installed, they can be joined together with drywall tape and lightly plastered to make the joints invisible. The entire surface can then be painted. Here are three types of plasterboard made by Knauf:

Regular gypsum board

This product is a white gypsum-based wallboard whose front and back surfaces are sandwiched in a board liner. It is the most common type of plasterboard and can be used extensively with no specific requirements. Knauf regular gypsum boards are used as the cladding component for drywall partitions, suspended ceilings, prefabricated building units and wall linings. These boards come in two standard dimensions with four thicknesses each. They are also available with a square edge or a tapered edge.

Moisture resistant gypsum board

This Knauf product is designed to be used in buildings that are exposed to high humidity and moisture, such as seaside offices or homes. These boards have a green paper liner that makes them more resistant to water vapour than regular gypsum boards. They are ideal for use in laundries, kitchens and bathrooms where steam and moisture can build up inside the room. They can also be used in any external area that is exposed to humidity. These boards are able to breathe and balance the humidity in a room.

Fire resistant gypsum board

These boards should be used when a building needs to be fire-rated. The gypsum holds a small amount of water that escapes to the surface of the board when heat is applied. This makes the board damp and cools it down, which slows down the spread of flames in the event of a fire. The core of these boards are reinforced with fibreglass for added fire protection. They can be installed in kitchens, ventilation shafts and anywhere that needs to be protected from flames. These boards can be recognised by their pink paper liner.

All three of these Knauf products also offer sound insulation for a quieter interior. Plasterboard offers a certain amount of soundproofing, keeping noise contained inside the room. This makes gypsum board an ideal material for the walls and ceilings of music rooms, living rooms and entertainment areas. Knauf plasterboards are environmentally-friendly and meet strict international standards for energy efficiency, affordability, performance and quality.
